Good practice for funding applications
Make sure you are applying to the appropriate organisation
· Find out as much as you can about them and tailor your application towards their criteria
What is it your project is designed to achieve
· Who will it help highlight the range and number of people that will benefit, those which help a larger number can be looked on more favourably
· Why is there a need for your work
Try to keep your application simple and to the point
· Remember they are likely to have to process a large number of applications so need to be clear and concise
· Avoid using jargon
Consider the amount
· Does the organisation support the amount you wish to obtain
· Do you need to raise some of the funds yourself e.g. match funding
· Budget carefully and show why that amount is needed
Are you the right sort of organisation
· Some funding is restricted to registered charities
Does your location fall under their jurisdiction
· Is your location within their boundaries
Will there be enough time from when you apply to when your proposed project start date
· Most organisations give a guide as to how long it can take to process an application and dates they meet
· Make sure your project will fit to their timescale
· Do not miss the deadline!
Answer the questions
· It is easy to state what it is you want to do but make sure you are actually answering what they ask you
· Make sure all questions are fully answered
Read any guidelines they have on site
· All applications may be different so make use of the information and help they provide you with
Proof read your work and check any figures
· Even small mistakes could hinder your bid
· Have someone else look over before submitting, you may not be able to spot your own mistakes
Take copies of both the application and any supporting information
· If it is lost it can easily be resubmitted
· You can refer to it if asked any further questions
· If unsuccessful you will have a document to work from and important information recorded together
Do you require any additional support as well as the funding
· Some organisations are more suited to providing extra help such as training
What stage is the project in
· It can be the case that funding is only available for projects already in motion, others providing capital to help with start up costs
· Do you need to buy any equipment or even set up a property
If required provide appropriate supporting evidence
· Not all organisations ask for this in the initial application stage but it may be required at a later stage
Covering letters are important
· Spend time on writing it, do not just tag it on the end as this will be the document that introduces your project and first impressions are important
If you get an offer then be sure to respond within the timescale they require
· Be prepared with any further information or documentation
Consider how you will report back on your progress
· Organisations like to see where the money went!
