Vote Care Zone to help alleviate Poverty in Peterborough

Here is an easy way for you to make a real difference to alleviate poverty in your local area in exchange for a few moments of your time and a few clicks of your mouse.

NatWest CommunityForce is a new initiative which sees NatWest working with local communities to support people, projects and charities making a real difference where they live. NatWest do this through the provision of money and volunteers directly to groups that provide services in their community. In Peterborough the three local charities who receive the highest public vote will each receive a grant of £6000 to help support their valuable work in the community.

delivering1Care Zone is one such project that is hoping to win your vote. The aim of Care Zone is to help alleviate poverty in Peterborough by providing furniture, clothes, children’s items and food all free of charge to those in need across the city. Established over 8 years ago in Care Zone founder Janie Bingham’s front room, the need was so great that it soon grew and is now housed in two large warehouse facilities in Peterborough.

“I saw such poverty in people’s homes that my heart was moved to help them. Each year we see more and more clients being referred to the Care Zone for support. Our clients are amazed that there are people that genuinely care about them, and it’s great to see how we can transform their lives by just the provision of a bed to sleep on.”

Janie Bingham, Project Manager

The Care Zone relies on donations of clothing, food and furniture which its team then reuses or recycles to meet demand. Clients who are in need and either have no access to funds or very little money, are referred to the Care Zone through local agencies. When Clients visit the warehouse, volunteers show them around and they can pick out three large items of furniture, plus clothing and any other items they need - all for free! The Care Zone are planning to transform part of their warehousing into a training centre for vulnerable or long term unemployed individuals to provide them with volunteering opportunities and gain new skills which could lead to them gaining future employment. Care Zone also provides emergency food parcels.

With your vote Care Zone could use the money to help finance our training centre or to put the money towards purchasing a new van, which is essential for us delivering furniture to our clients. The Care Zone is mainly staffed by dedicated volunteers from the very communities they are seeking to help.
