Getting involved – Neighbourhood Councils
It was great to see over 150 Christians from across the denominations come together before the general election to question six of our prospective parliamentary candidates. Some of us went away clearer, some changed their minds and some were still scratching their heads about who to vote for! Most importantly, those in attendance embraced the opportunity to dialogue with leaders and felt it an important part of their Christian walk to ‘Get Involved’.
This was one opportunity to be informed and influence those who make decisions about our city. However, there are many more conversations and spaces that we can join. Maybe homelessness is something on your heart, overcoming crime in your street or gaining a greater understanding of care for your elderly neighbours.
One way to have a voice, and get involved are ‘Neighbourhood Councils’. There are seven different councils across the city covering different local areas. They provide a chance to hear about and influence some of the decisions that are made. Meetings include open sessions to raise issues that people feel are important and suggest subjects to be included for future discussions. You can meet local councillors and there are often representatives from different statutory and voluntary organisations such as the Police.
So.....church of Peterborough, are you going to get involved? You could go along yourself, put them onto the church newsletter, consider going as a house group or pray for their successful contribution to the city.
