COUNSELLING AT THE WELL
......A bit of background
The Well was set up as a charity in 1995 by local Christians concerned to meet some of the problems of Pet erborough people in a professional and affordable way. It has been providing counselling on a wide range of issues, initially mainly to people in Peterborough churches, but in recent years and increasingly to people in the Peterborough community as a whole. All its counsellors and trustees are practicing Christians and come from a variety of churches.
The aim of Counselling is to help people to get their problems into perspective, to identify the causes of the problems, and to decide on an appropriate action plan to deal with them.
Clients come to The Well in a number of ways including by just phoning up, but increasing numbers come via local GPs, NHS mental health teams, the police, church ministers, etc. The issues they seek help with include depression, anxiety, serious illness, miscarriage, bereavement, sexual, physical or emotional abuse, gambling and other addictions, marital problems, family breakdown, and unemployment.
For a significant proportion of clients The Well is able to make much needed counselling accessible due to the flexibility in its approach either to money, or the type of counselling needed or the period of counselling required.
The Well is a member of the Association of Christian Counsellors and the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). To be a member of BACP all the counsellors who work for the organization have to meet appropriate qualification criteria. The majority of counsellors at The Well have nationally recognized Counselling qualifications (Level 4 Diploma, its equivalent or above) or are trainees working towards this qualification, and all the counsellors have the required practical experience and qualifications to meet BACP requirements.
