Passion for Peterborough

youth1City centre youth project – Saturday 20th February- Saturday 27th March 2010

Setting the scene.

Over the last 3 months or more a picture has been emerging from different organisations about providing for young people in the city centre, using a neutral space to deliver city centre youth work. Furthermore the police are aware of the need to prevent anti-social behaviour in the city centre and all three organisations recognise a lack of facilities for young people there at the weekends.

Who is involved?

The proposal is to have young people from the three organisations (Churches together in Central Peterborough, the Young People’s Service and the Police) plan workshops and create a space for young people (aged 13-19yrs) to go and relax, get to know youth workers and do activities if they wish. It will be on a Saturday afternoon between 1-4pm for six weeks from Saturday 20th February to 27th March 2010.  This is being seen as a trial and a chance to consult with young people for this type of facility in the City centre. All the art, music and film created will be shown on the last Saturday to the general public from 12noon.

Stuart Mathers, youth worker for Peterborough City Council’s young people’s service will be coordinating the project with support from Sarah Newns, student youth worker  at Park Raod Baptist Church, with a team of other youth work staff and volunteers. A number of the volunteers will be from the older generations in order to build stronger bridges across generations in the city centre.

Matt Newman, Inspector for the city centre fully supports the event and will also provide PSCO support for each session. We are also grateful to Queensgate who have made it possible through  giving their support to the project.

Objectives

The objectives for the partnership project are:

·         Open a safe space for young people in the city centre to meet together, engage in positive activity and build relationships with local youth workers and community volunteers.

·         Reduce anti-social behaviour in the city centre.

·         Promote an all age approach to the city centre, giving young people a space.

·         Show a positive image of young people through arts and media creation and display.

·         Consult and engage with young people regarding current and future city centre facilities and activities

Activities

The young people have suggested activities such as photography, textile/ fashion creation, music production, with a space to relax and refreshments.

How will it be promoted?

Currently as a number of young people hang out in the city centre there is no need for formal advertising and by keeping it low key we do not get great numbers coming in the city to access the shop and it is then manageable. We are doing a few flyers to pass on information and releasing a press statement in the week with the aim of celebrating the success of project. Peterborough City Council’s marketing and design team are supporting the press releases as well as helping young people shape the interior of the shop.
