Care Zone
What is the Care Zone?
Care Zone is a Christian project that aims to alleviate poverty within Peterborough and demonstrate God’s love by assisting the underprivileged, disadvantaged or needy people in the community by helping to meet their basic needs.
The Care Zone is jointly operated by KingsGate Community Church and Open Doors Church but is open to volunteer helpers from all churches.
It was originally set up in 2001 and since that date it has seen significant growth. In November 2008 we were blessed with the provision of a new improved warehouse facility in Werrington. We regularly receive donations of furniture from members of various churches and from some local companies, including Ikea.
How does it help?
“Amazing, fantastic, a live saver, we couldn’t do without you!”

We provide food parcels, furniture, household items, electrical products, clothing, toys, bed linen, curtains and other items for free to help those families/individuals most in need and who otherwise could not afford such things. To receive support they must be referred to the Care Zone by one of our registered agencies. At present we have over 50 agencies that regularly refer their clients to us for support.
Both the agencies and our clients are overwhelmed by our generosity. Many of them comment that without this service their clients would have nothing.
“I didn’t know what to expect when I came, but I can't get over it. I have a wonderful sofa, in blue, which is just what I wanted, a table and some chairs and a bed to sleep on. You are very kind thank you.” Kelly – Client

In 2008 we had 2397 individuals visit our warehouse and we managed to assist 870 families. A recent example is a homeless family who were fortunately re-housed but had no furniture at all. Upon referral to us we were able to supply them with a bed, a sofa and a few other essential items to make it into a home.
Want to get involved?
The Care Zone is open from 10am to 3pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. We are currently recruiting more volunteers to help us raise our service standards. We have a variety of roles from helping to sort and pack clothing and bedding, covering reception, assisting in the warehouse to being part of the delivery team. We accept Christian and non-Christian volunteers. If you have a passion to help others and see their lives improved please do get in touch. If you would like to know more please contact Janie Bingham at KingsGate Community Church on 311156.
